WHAT IS A DEPENDENT CARE ACCOUNT?

The dependent care account may be used for eligible childcare or elder care expenses.

HOW DO THESE SPENDING ACCOUNTS WORK?

The amount you elect is deducted from your paycheck and stored in your account until you need it. You can request reimbursement by using your debit card at the time of purchase, filing your claims online, or submitting paper claims along with your receipts to AmeriFlex. A check will be sent to you for qualified expenses you have incurred and paid out-of-pocket.

For 2025, you may contribute up to $5,000 (household limit) in your dependent care account and for 2026, you may contribute up to $7,500.

FSA funds are “use it or lose it” at the end of the plan year.

  • Contribution limits

    A Dependent Care FSA allows you to set aside money before it’s taxed, and use it to pay qualified day care expenses. Expenses can be for your children or a dependent adult who lives with you and depends on you for support. Day care must be required so that you (and your spouse, if married) can work or attend school full-time.

    1. $7,500 per year if you are married and filing a joint return, or if you are a single parent.
    2. $2,500 per year per parent if you are married and filing separately,

  • Claim deadline

    2022 funds must be used within the calendar year (January 1 – December 31). Claims must be filed by the deadline shown.

    Use 2025 funds from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025. File claims by March 31, 2026.

  • Unused funds carry over?

    No.

  • What expenses are eligible?

    Generally, eligible expenses include DAY CARE expenses for dependents you can claim on your tax return (children up to age 13, adult dependents incapable of self-care, etc.). The Dependent Care FSA is NOT used for your dependents’ health care needs. A complete list of eligible expenses can be found at www.irs.gov, Publication 503. You may also use the funds for elder care expenses.
